Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 1,5 Tesla

Advanced medical technology has brought much progress to facilitate medical professionals in establishing a diagnosis and defining a specific treatment for a patient. One of the advanced technologies commonly used nowadays is the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that could give clear images of the body parts and support a patient’s diagnosis.

What is MRI?

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a medical diagnostic technique to evaluate and creates images of your body using a strong magnetic field and radio waves without surgical procedure, x-rays, or radioactive substances. During the MRI procedure, molecules inside your body may shift and unite to form signals. These signals will be captured by a receiver and transmitted to a computer in which they are processed and displayed in the monitor as a clear image from your visceral body structure.

What is the benefit of MRI?

The MRI can create images of soft organs (such as the brain, bone marrow, nerve system) more clearly and more sensitive than the conventional x-ray or CT scanning. It also provides clearer images of the musculoskeletal soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, joint spaces especially in knee or shoulder injury. Other benefits of the MRI include the evaluation of chest anatomy and abnormalities, breast, abdominal viscera, blood vessels and heart. Bone structure is usually better shown with a CT scan rather than MRI. In addition, MRI in Medistra Hospital has been doing Software Updates, so that they can perform 3D Hearts and MRI Touch. For patients who have abnormalities in the heart organ, 3D Hearts can analyze more detailed and clear and make the doctors were able to diagnose the disease more precisely and accurately. Otherwise, MR Touch is used to analyze the hardness of the liver so that a physician is able to assess and provide appropriate therapy and minimize the risk of infection due to the actions of other tests.

Is MRI safe?

MRI procedure is painless and will not cause tissue destruction. However, the strong magnetic field used during MRI could pull on and move any metal objects in your body. Imagine if it is located inside your body, the object could cause some injury. Therefore, it is important that all metallic items be removed before starting the MRI examination. By entering the MRI facility, the operator or radiology staff will ask your previous surgery or medical history for any implanted metallic objects inside your body. Implanted metallic items inside the human body could be a clip for aneurysm, heart pacemaker, hearing aid, dental prostheses, and so on. The MRI procedure may be cancelled for patients that have that kind of object since it may harm them selves.

What is the advantage of MRI?

MRI has many advantages compare to other imaging techniques, i.e. it can generate clearer body part images that can be shown from any angle without the use of x-rays. MRI can provide clear images without changing the patient’s position and most of the procedure can be done without a contrast media. The MRI facility in MEDISTRA Hospital has also extra abilities to assess certain organ dynamics (functional MRI), to assess blood distribution in the brain or the heart (perfusion imaging), and to evaluate metabolism inside a tumor (spectroscopy imaging).
